We offer ongoing training/support to YP Not in Education, Employment and Training (NEET) to break down barriers to work and create pathways into Education, Employment and Training (ETE). Mediorite support Young People (YP) 14 - 25 at risk of exclusion or (NEET), affected by a range of complex barriers, preventing them from accessing (ETE) opportunities. Barriers include poor mental and physical health, insecure housing, exploitation and offending behaviour, lack of education/skills, and/or young carers/parents.
Over 8 weeks, Mediorite deliver a videography course for the young men. The course covers camera operations, filming, creating music videos and scenes.
"Teaching a practical film-making course with the learners in HMP ISIS has been an exceptional experience. The course has not only fostered their creativity to allow them to become self-expressive through the art of storytelling, podcasts and video creation but they have learned the importance of soft skills they can use in everyday life such as the importance of working in teams, adapting to problems and communicating with each other whilst listening.
Self-expression was fundamental for the learners because they ended up creating short films relevant to the way they view the world and their life which was an empowering experience not only for the learners but also for myself as I was able to connect with their identity.
A big thanks to our partnership with Untold for allowing our workshop to be possible and helping the young men find their voice through film. It has been a great partnership which has allowed us to make a positive impact by being great role models for the young men. The podcasts allowed them to articulate and see different perspectives based on the topics that were given to them. It was interesting to see after a few sessions how the learners started to listen to each other without judgement.
Through this journey with the learners I have learned not only about their experiences but also the potential they all have individually and how film-making really didn’t just make a creative impact but how it built their character."
